What is brass jewellery?

Brass is a commonly used metal used when creating all types of jewellery, due to it's versatile nature and affordability to produce. Brass jewellery can be a fantastic material choice for jewellery for most people, however as it's an alloy of copper and zinc it may not suit all skin types and can tarnish over time. If you have nickel allergies we recommend that you wear uncoated surgical steel or titanium jewellery.

Why does brass tarnish?

Brass jewellery may tarnish over time, this is due to the copper component of the jewellery reacting to air and moisture, a process known as oxidation. This can result in greenish or blueish hues on the jewellery.

Can brass jewellery be cleaned?

Yes, of course! We recommend regularly cleaning your jewellery for keep it in it's best condition. Cleaning brass jewellery is a simple, quick process. You can clean brass jewellery with a number of cleaning methods. The most common way to clean brass jewellery is to simply use a mild dish soap and water, gently scrub with a toothbrush or soft bristle cleaning brush.

You may also use a dedicated brass cleaning solution or a vinegar solution. Take care when cleaning jewellery with gems and stones as the solution may discolour the stones!

How to care for my brass jewellery?

We always recommend keeping your brass and brass coated jewellery as dry and clean as possible. We advise storing in a jewellery pouch and removing the jewellery before bathing, swimming and showering. We also recommend not wearing the jewellery whilst applying make up, hair sprays or perfumes as this can speed up the process of discolouration with your jewellery.
